House of Darkness Review: If You Prick Them, Do Bros Not Bleed? The New York Times

house of dark

This is only accentuated by the fact Curtis knows how to drain a spooky location dry. Images like vampire Carolyn standing in a window, draped in white, beckoning her lover to become one of the damned is a better use of Lucy iconography than any Dracula movie made before House of Dark Shadows. And the film’s ending sequence reaches an operatic opulence rarely seen, even in vampire cheapies. Barnabas, bathed in a blue light and shrouded in inexplicable fog in the interior of his decrepit home, beckons Maggie, now in a wedding dress, toward him as the famous melody of Josette’s music box twinkles, only now in a weeping minor key. It was morbid, obviously, but also romantic at a time when vampires were defined by the coldness of Christopher Lee or the goofiness of Scooby-Doo.

Mount Vernon has embarked on a landmark preservation project to ensure the Mansion's structural integrity for generations to come. Jeff struggles with each of them individually, but eventually succeeds in ending their undead lives. Shortly thereafter, Julia discovers that Stokes was right, and that the vampire haunting Collinsport (and responsible for Carolyn's death) is Barnabas Collins.

And to be sure, House of Dark Shadows is in many ways a Dracula movie. It’s also insight into how Curtis originally viewed the Barnabas character before Frid went on a charm offensive. Playing almost like a CliffNotes version of Barnabas’ first several storylines on the show, the vampire is awakened during the film’s opening moments because of the foolishness of groundskeeper Willie Loomis (John Karlen). Barnabas then forces poor old Willie to become his living slave and creates a fictitious narrative about being a distant cousin descended from the original Barnabas Collins, whom family lore claims sailed away to London in 1795, never to be heard from again. Funeral services are held for Carolyn, and she is buried in the Collins family mausoleum.

Lucia di Lammermoor reaches its true stature if what happens on stage matches the inspiration of Donizetti’s score. But it cannot do this without a soprano capable of its leading role. She sang Donizetti’s top notes without transposing them down – allied to darker chest voice tones and a cherishable ability to sing softly while still projecting the words, which together enable her to inhabit the searching side of the role.

Instead, Night of Dark Shadows was made, focusing on Collinwood after new heir Quentin Collins (David Selby) takes over. Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (played by Joan Bennett in the series and the first film) gets a brief mention in the film, but is not present. Convinced that she can cure him, she arrives at the Old House and offers him the ability to live as a normal human being. Barnabas feels threatened by Julia’s proposition, but the benefits are too great for him to ignore. She begins preparing a series of injections designed to isolate and destroy the offending vampiric cell structure. After the funeral, David is playing down by the old swimming pool when he hears an eerie voice calling his name.

Carolyn arrives and overhears the conversation, and threatens to tell Maggie that Barnabas is a vampire. At this Barnabas flies into a rage and attacks Carolyn, almost killing her. After satiating his bloodlust he tells Willie to "get her out of here". Willie brings her back to Collinwood where the housekeeper, Mrs. Johnson, discovers her body.

Unrestricted by TV's censors, the film is far more graphically violent than its television counterpart, with dripping vampire bites and bloody deaths. The film was released at the height of the TV show's popularity to great commercial success. Later on at the ball, he is introduced to young David Collins' governess and Jeff's girlfriend, Maggie Evans, and is instantly smitten with her, as she bears a striking resemblance to his long-lost fiancée, Josette du Pres. Maggie is thinking about leaving Collinwood, but Barnabas persuades her to stay. Back at the Old House, he tells Willie about Josette and how she took her own life on the night they were to be married. Carolyn overhears and threatens to expose him out of jealousy.

Ruciński also has the tricks of the trade when it comes to incisive vocal phrasing and grabbing the ear in ensemble. As Edgardo, Lucia’s beloved and Enrico’s enemy, the Basque tenor Xabier Anduaga makes a more generalised impact. He has a stylish presence but in his big moments – the act one love duet with Lucia (in which Sierra is again superb) and particularly in his final act three aria – Anduaga sometimes pushes too hard and loud.

Despite his aging form, Barnabas lunges at her and strangles her to death. Meanwhile, Willie goes to the cemetery and breaks into the Collins family mausoleum. He deciphers a riddle, which leads him into a secret burial chamber, deep beneath the family tomb.

If you're a girl vampire, you have trouble putting on makeup because you can't see yourself in a mirror. If you're a guy, you can't ask a date over to your pad for a few drinks. And even if you live to be 300 years old, you can never go to a dentist. At least in the 18th and l9th centuries, you could read about yourself in the paper once in a while.

It also appropriated every classic horror trope from Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, the Brontë sisters, and Edgar Allan Poe, and synthesized them for an audience that was now consuming it along with kid-friendly board games and trading cards. Stokes and Julia try to explain, but Elizabeth and Roger refuse to listen. Carolyn's former fiancé Todd encounters her, and she bites him. After he is taken back to Collinwood, the family realises that Stokes and Julia were correct about the vampires.

Insung Sim is a velvet toned Raimondo, the Lammermoor chaplain. Giacomo Sagripanti’s conducting varies between idiomatic and stolid. Sierra’s impact is matched by that of her villainous brother Enrico. Artur Ruciński’s inky baritone is well suited to this dastardly character and he looks the part.

He lays her down on an altar and is about to bite her when Jeff wakes up and shoots at him, but Willie, running to stop Barnabas, moves in the way, and is hit by Jeff's crossbow bolt. Barnabas lures Jeff out of his hiding place and forces him to be a witness by placing him in a trance. However, as Barnabas attempts to bite Maggie, he screams in pain as he's struck in his back. Turning around, he's shocked then enraged to discover that it was Willie—in his final act of redemption—who stabbed him with the crossbow bolt.

But these days when someone says he believes in vampires (as the Professor does in "House of Dark Shadows"), people get embarrassed and clear their throats and, when you're not looking, they point their fingers at the sides of their heads and make little circles. It’s also fairly influential, as confirmed by what happened after Dan Curtis dropped Barnabas in favor of another vampire. The preview version of the film (shown Aug. 24, 1970 at NYC's The DeMille Theatre on 47th Street) included a scene where young David Collins pretends to hang himself. It was removed because there were concerns some children might "try this at home." No copies of this footage are known to exist.

Her opening aria was sensationally good, while her mad scene was not merely vocally breathtaking – sung in a disembodied tone that dovetailed well with Katherine Baker’s flute obbligato – but was also genuinely disturbing to witness. Earlier generations tended to see Donizetti’s 1835 adaptation of Scott’s story of feuding families in the Scottish hills as just a vehicle for the coloratura soprano singing Lucia to show off her vocal agility. Maria Callas’s seriousness and dramatic gifts blew that away in the 1950s. Katie Mitchell’s 2016 production, revived here for the second time, deepens and darkens the work still further for the post-#MeToo era. Driving home to her secluded estate after meeting at a local bar, a player out to score thinks his beautiful, mysterious date will be another casual hook-up.

Sealed 18th-century Bottles Discovered

To make this climactic crux work she uses a split-screen staging that contextualises the longings and jealousies of the opera’s tragic triangle. The original story is acted out on one side of the stage, while subplots and background events are simultaneously dramatised on the other. It can be distracting, and when there is a chorus on stage it is restrictive, but it is always thoughtful, never boring, and sometimes shocking. Exposition Park’s Ochre House Theater is mounting the premiere of artistic director Matthew Posey’s Patti & Theo, a dark musical comedy about an alcoholic Brooklyn couple. Will their “Drinking Religion” outlive the struggling artists, portrayed by Posey, who also directs, and Polly Maynard, who wrote the lyrics to the show’s original songs? Among the rest of the cast are Ochre House regulars Lauren Massey, Quinn Coffman and Isaac Davies.

Barnabas Collins, now adorned in modern business attire, arrives at Collinwood and introduces himself. Roger and the others are amazed to see him - he is the spitting image of an ancestor named Barnabas Collins whose portrait hangs in the Gallery Room at Collinwood. Barnabas claims to be a descendent of the original Barnabas Collins, whose family moved to England some time in 1797.

The dark green glass bottles were found upright and sealed, each containing liquid.

Willie tells Roger to look for his own kid, thus incurring Roger’s ire - he is promptly fired. But the real mystery is why a new Neil LaBute movie doesn’t seem to be on anybody’s radar. But judging by the result, this wicked little movie suggests his voice may be uniquely suited to the broader conversation. Hap thinks of himself as a “decent guy,” and because Long is such an inherently likable actor, some may give his character the benefit of the doubt. This clearly isn’t his first one-night stand — nor Mina’s, as a pile of men’s loafers seen over the opening and closing credits unsettlingly suggests.

He targets his clueless descendants who live there now and pursues Maggie, the incarnation of his lost love. Julia eventually discovers that Barnabas is the vampire responsible.

While certainly a B-horror in the Hammer mold, this chiller wasn’t satisfied with one bloodsucker, or even two. Jeff and the others pursue them; however, Roger and Stokes are killed (both turned into vampires whom Jeff kills). Jeff eventually finds Maggie at an old church in a trance and in Josette's wedding gown. Willie warns him against trying to stop Barnabas and knocks him out. Willie leads Maggie out of the room to where Barnabas is waiting for her.

What to Watch

David disappears one evening and his father, Roger Collins sends Maggie out to look for him. Maggie searches through the Collinwood stables where she finds the family's drunken handyman, Willie Loomis. Willie has no interest in searching for David, and prefers to tell Maggie about his desire to find the missing family jewels. Roger enters the stable and tells Willie to join the search party for David.

Letterboxd — Your life in film

Willie pries the coffin open hoping to find the legendary missing jewels, but instead finds the vampire, Barnabas Collins. Barnabas grabs Willie by the throat and turns him into his unwilling slave. It’s pretty clear what Hap Jackson (Justin Long) is hoping will follow when he offers Mina Murray (Kate Bosworth, eerily difficult to read) a ride home from the local bar. Guys like Hap refer to nights like this as “getting lucky,” though he’s almost certain to have a different view of things once this tryst is through. The lucky one here in fact is Mina, whose motives aren’t nearly as apparent — the uncertainty of which drives the sense of creeping dread that percolates over the next hour and a half, depicted practically in real time. After writer-director Neil LaBute's long absence from movies, his big-screen comeback flips the dynamic of 'In the Company of Men' for horror crowds.

Barnabas angrily bellows Willie's name and strangles him to death. In that moment, the hypnotic effect on Jeff is broken, and he finishes driving the crossbow bolt into Barnabas’ back. The weapon pierces the vampire’s heart and Barnabas is destroyed. Willie Loomis, the handyman of Collinwood, an 18th-century mansion in Maine, accidentally releases vampire Barnabas Collins from his coffin.

Enraged, Barnabas delivers a deadly bite to Carolyn, much to Willie's horror. A shaken Willie takes Carolyn back home; she slowly walks to the doorway, but she is soon discovered slumped in the doorway—dead—by the maid, Mrs. Johnson. If you want campy-looking weapon glamour and cute minions, you’ll definitely want to participate. In order to complete the full event, you’ll need access to at least one Stormblood area. But here is “House of Darkness” anyway, a talky, allegorical horror film that delivers plenty of LaBute’s typically sharp irony and observations but little raison d’être.

Barnabas pulls the bolt from the mortally wounded Willie's back, wheels around and attempts to use his vampiric hypnosis on Jeff. Barnabas drops the crossbow bolt, which is noticed by the dying Willie--still laying on the floor. Just as Barnabas is about to vampirize Maggie, hands drive the crossbow bolt into his back. Howling in pain, he turns to see Willie, who has used his last bit of life energy to stop the vampire.

One of the most potent ways these leagues engrain themselves in the local community is through partnerships with local businesses. These sponsorships provide financial support for various necessities like jerseys, soccer equipment, and facility upkeep, while players enjoy benefits like service discounts. For soccer enthusiasts planning to move to Charlotte, understanding the plethora of options and immersing themselves in the local soccer scene can greatly help their transition. Engaging with local communities, participating in social events organized by such groups, and attending local games can provide a comprehensive view of Charlotte’s soccer culture. Besides the leagues, resources include soccer-focused fitness classes to help build playing skills and endurance, and local sports shops for equipment guidance and purchases.

However, each league may implement its unique set of rules to complement official regulations, precipitating a more inclusive and enjoyable environment. SportsLink started in the late 1990s, emphasizing the value of community gathering and physical activity. Similarly, the Over 40 Soccer League in Charlotte provides an exclusive opportunity for players over 40 years old to continue enjoying the game. In Charlotte, the dynamic soccer culture is shaped richly by each of the city’s diverse adult soccer leagues. Each league has its own intricate details of operation, distinguished narrative of development, and staunch commitment to a mission that contributes exponentially to the city’s vibrant love for soccer. It’s not just CASL that offers such comprehensive facilities and amenities for adult soccer in Charlotte. The Metrolina Adult Soccer League (MASL) and the SportsLink are other players in this game.

Some adopt a year-long continuous schedule, while others adhere to a seasonal schedule, typically following the spring, summer, and fall seasons. League managers would usually communicate the detailed schedule to all participating teams at the start of each season. The Charlotte Adult Soccer League (CASL), established in 1981, is one of the oldest community-based leagues committed to the game. Another prominent league is the Metrolina Adult Soccer League (MASL), which has been active since 1990 and is known for its community-driven efforts to promote the sport.

Looking online, there are community pages and local sport forums where new players can connect with existing league members to seek advice and guidance. The mission of SportsLink is broader, encompassing many sports, not just soccer. Their mission is to provide fun, well-organized sports activities that encourage adults to remain active and social in their community. On the other hand, MASL operates under a philosophy to improve skills, understanding, and enjoyment of soccer. They strive to offer an environment where everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level or soccer experience. Starting with just four coed teams, SportsLink grew to be the largest provider of adult sports leagues in Charlotte with over 29,000 participants playing year round.

I've played softball, kickball, and sand volleyball via Sportslink and have enjoyed each experience. I also greatly appreciate their additional organized social events that they promote monthly. Great league, great organization, and a fantastic way to meet new people and experience Charlotte. Staff is helpful with any sort of billing issues, and I appreciate their organization. For individuals new to Charlotte or adult league soccer, several resources are available.

Cruise Ship Terminal of Vancouver BC Visitor Guide

cruise terminal vancouver bc

You will need an eTA (electronic Travel Authorization) if you are flying to Canada for your cruise. You can apply online if you are a resident of an eTA eligible country; the electronic travel permit costs CAN$7. You do not need an eTA if you are a US citizen or are arriving by road or sea. As the main hub for one-way and round-trip Alaska cruises, Vancouver is the point of departure for cruises to Hawaii, Asia, South America, Mexico, West Coast USA and the Panama Canal. The port also offers lower harbor dues (up to 47%) for ships using clean fuels and eco-friendly technology and awards suitable participants with a Blue Circle Award for energy efficiency.

The project included the extension of Seaspan's water lot by 130 ft/40 m and the addition of two new drydocks (smaller) plus a floating pontoon, located to the west of the old drydocks. The Vancouver cruise terminal is a busy place, especially in the summer months. It’s best to arrive early by at least two hours to allow plenty of time to check in and get through security.

Cruises to and From The Port of Vancouver

The largest cruise ship ever to dock in Vancouver Port was the Norwegian Bliss. The arrival required carefully planning due to the low clearance of the Lions Gate Bridge. Ships of this height can only access the port at low tide when a First Narrows Traffic Control Zone operates. This means that no other ship can be in the narrows during the ship’s transit.

Parking at Vancouver Cruise Terminal

You will be given a disembarkation time if you are part of a larger cruise ship. You will need to wait in your allocated lounge area on-board until your group is called. The Canada Place cruise ship terminal is about a 35-minute drive from the Vancouver International Airport (YVR). There are several options available for getting from the Vancouver International Airport to the Vancouver cruise terminal, both public and private transportation. Note that the cruise ship passenger disembarkation pickup point is in the Canada Place parking lot.

If you have a few days before your cruise, I recommend exploring Stanley Park, going for a walk or bike ride along the seawall, visiting Capilano Suspension Bridge, and checking out Granville Island. This Vancouver cruise port shore excursion covers the most ground, is the most flexible, and has the lowest price. That’s why booking a private transfer to the Vancouver cruise terminal from your hotel or Vancouver International Airport is always something to consider. For those driving to the cruise port from other locations in the city, I’ll be getting into the parking shortly.

Cruise Planning at this Port

A taxi will be cheaper and more convenient, especially if you are traveling as a couple or group. Your passport and documentation will be checked by US Customs and Border Patrol as part of the embarkation process. The Port of Vancouver Cruise Terminal is conveniently located in downtown Vancouver. The official address is Canada Place Pier, 999 Canada Place, Vancouver, BC, V6C 3E1.

Getting to the Cruise Terminal from Vancouver International Airport

If you’re looking for a cheaper cruise, sail in May or September/October when there are fewer people sailing. These cruises typically sail to Alaska, but you can also find cruises to the Hawaiian Islands, Mexico, and even Asia. I don’t want to bog you down with too many choices, so you’ll see I’ve only left a link for Enterprise. The hotel has an outdoor pool, spa, and a gourmet restaurant with views of the city and harbour. The Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver is located right next to the Vancouver Cruise Terminal and makes for a great place to stay before your cruise.

The three-berth cruise terminal can actually handle up to four cruise ships simultaneously. Read on for our breakdown of the Vancouver Cruise Terminal, including address information, cruise lines, directions, services and more. From Vancouver International Airport to hotels or the cruise port, taxis, ride-sharing services, and private shuttles are readily available.

If you are disembarking in Vancouver, you are required to complete a declaration card (E311) and clear Canadian customs through Canada Border Services Agency after picking up your baggage. Passports are not required at disembarkation however you must present your declaration card. Canada Place and the Indigo parking facility is located at the North end of Howe Street at Canada Place and is accessible 24 hours per day from the Canada Place entrance. Gastown, Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, is another of the city’s main shopping destinations, with a higher concentration of high-end retailers alongside stores selling antiques and First Nations art. Main Street by comparison favours more independent retail, and is the place to head if you’re looking for small boutiques and unique items. With a dense multicultural population, the city is a diverse and cosmopolitan destination, rich with art, history and a unique culinary identity that’s gaining momentum all the time.

Despite the Coronavirus crisis, 2020 became a record-breaking year in Vancouver Port's 108-year history by revenues (~USD 50 million / ~EUR 42M) or 15% increase over 2019. Moved through the seaport were 7+ million MT (metric tonnes) of commodities, 5,4+ million MT of grain, 0,3+ million MT of copper concentrate, 2700+ wind turbines, ~90,000 automobiles. Robson Street is a great place to do some shopping and Granville Island has a public market with fresh food and local goods.

The Vancouver cruise ship terminal is located in Downtown Vancouver. Indeed, it’s location makes it incredibly convenient to explore all the major attractions in Vancouver. For example, you might visit Gastown, Pacific Centre Mall, Robson Street, Chinatown, and the seawall. All of these are between a 5-20 minute walk from the Vancouver Cruise ship terminal exit. The Port Authority company Vancouver Fraser manages the federal seaport lands in and around the city.

That said, if you’re looking for something a little cheaper, there are also a few Vancouver hostels and some of the best cheap hotels in Vancouver nearby. Most of the best hotels near the Vancouver Cruise Ship Terminal are in some of the most expensive real estate in the city, so expect high prices. This shore excursion is the best value for money as the 3.5 hours really packs it in. Just know that the tours cap at 30, so it could be more packed than others. You can read reviews and check each tour’s price calendar by clicking the orange button.
